Yes, but do they dress themselves?

A couple doors down from our house is a costume shop. In the two months we've lived in this building, I've never once seen the shop open for business, and I'd just begun entertaining the action-packed thought that maybe the shop was really a front for a drug-running circle when I noticed, one morning on my way to work, that the window display had changed.

Previously, the assorted mannequins were all dressed in Egyptian garb--headdresses, Cleopatra kohl and all--but now, oh yes, they're all done up as pirates. Wussy, mannequin boys in knickers, with patent buckle shoes and cascading black ringlets; she-pirates in emerald velvet waistcoats. Bandanas and parrots and stilletto boots abound.

Oh yes. Shiver me timbers, indeed.

Why hello Thea...

Haven't said hey in a while. Just wanted to let you know I haven't forgotten about you.

I have a couple of books for you to check out...

Confessions of a Dangerous Mind...the jacket praise states that it "Reads like a classic." I didn't believe it. Until after I finished. A very well written memoir. Intriguing story. You will either love it or hate it. (I compare the writing style to a Hunter S. Thompson sort of crazed narrative.)

For my non-fiction class, we have to read A Million Little Pieces. A couple weeks later Oprah made it her choice. Now you can find it hiding in ever corner being sold for 40% off the jacket price. That Oprah has some pull, I tell you what. Open up the book, read the first 5-7 pages, and decide from that.

Also, as I am sure you have heard, Dahl did not just write top-notch children books particularly well-adapted to the screen. He wrote short stories like he invented them…and actually he did. Almost. You know those twists at the end of the popular horror movies and in every other action book today? Well…it is said Dahl discovered that style. He makes it work. Check out Omnibus, a fat collection of his short stories. There are some beauties in there. Inspiring.

Don’t take the suggestions too hard. If you check out one of them and don’t like it…I don’t know what I was thinking about recommending it in the first place. Ha! Seriously…I need to keep you on my good side.

Much love.

Mmm, books. I saw the Confessions movie, which made for a rather awkward movie-viewing with my father-in-law and his wife, but it was good--and one can only assume that the book will be better! Hoorah! It shall find its way onto my shelf.

I've never read Hunter S. Thompson, but have been feeling more and more that I should.

As for Dahl, I borrowed his collection Switch Bitch from my dad ages ago, and neither read it nor gave it back, so I'll have to get to work on that one--I love his kids books (and have since I, well, was a kid), and have heard that his short stories as very good.

Thanks for the recommendations! I love recommendations, because I can only find so many decent books on my own, you know? It's a full time job, but without pay.

-Thea

PS-Speaking of jobs, how's the new one going?
